Beasts!

Antique Walking Canes with beasts, especially lions, are a very popular item among established gentlemen. Many aristocrats with a lion’s family crest surely had one walking stick with a lion on the handle.

Mountain Lion Pewter Walking Stick

PPowerful, graceful, and supremely adaptable, the mountain lion (or cougar, panther, or puma) laid claim to a range that encompassed most of the New World, from the arctic Yukon to the forested coastal mountains of Tierra del Fuego and from the shores of the Pacific to the shores of the Atlantic ocean. The mountain lion is the power symbol of the new world.

Elephant Pewter Walking Stick

Elephants are the largest land animals now living, and they have appeared in cultures across the world. They are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence. Aristotle once said the elephant was “the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind.” An elephant cane symbolizes your power, intelligence, and wisdom.

Heraldic Lion Pewter Walking Stick

The lion, long considered the king of beasts, is a common charge in heraldry. It traditionally symbolizes bravery, strength, and royalty. On this cane, the lion is in “rampant” position, which is depicted in profile standing erect with forepaws raised. The word rampant is often omitted, especially in early blazon, as this is the most typical position of a carnivorous quadruped.

Red Riding Hood Wolf Walking Stick

This is the wolf in the Red Riding Hood, and I was not quite sure whether I should put him in the “beast” category. I thought, however, some humor might be good for a gentleman.

Lion on Mountain Pewter Walking Stick

Victorians were well-known for being insatiable collectors — even the ornate walking sticks carried by the gentlemen of the day reflected their interest in exotic goods. Using 19th-century antiques as the maker’s inspiration, they have recreated this fine-quality walking stick. With a polished hardwood shaft and a sculpted European solid pewter fob hand-cast by artisans in Brescia, Italy, using Old World techniques, it makes a unique dècor piece and a memorable heirloom gift!

Alligator Pewter Walking Stick

The alligator is known for its notorious bone-crushing bite. It is often described as a “living fossil,” as it has survived on earth for 200 million years. The alligator on this cane is, however, slightly caricatured and has a humorous face. It is rather more of a nice pet than a vicious beast.

Cobra Pewter Walking Stick

A cobra is a venomous snake; a short for cobra de capelo, which is Portuguese for “snake with hood,” or “hood-snake.” Most snakes under the name of cobra have strongly neurotoxic venom, which attacks the nervous system, causing paralysis, and can even kill the largest land animal, the elephant, with one bite. It is feared for its stealthiness, speed, and poisonous power, and is a symbol of a darkness in many stories, but the cobra is also a messenger from the gods in some cultures. When you hold the cobra cane, you have the choice to be evil or holy. Choose wisely.

Snake with Globe Pewter Walking Stick

Although the snake is often hated because of its venomous power, it is also a symbol of medicine. In many Asian cultures, the snake, especially the white snake, is a messenger from the gods, and often the protector of a community. This snake winds around the cane and protecst the globe, which symbolizes the world. Yes, when you hold this cane, you are with the protector of the world.
